Guest Blogger: Football Fix!

WAKE UP THE MASSES!!! This is Something Clever.

Football is officially back!! A weekend of upsets, blowouts, and top 10 opponents going down to the wire...and all that was just from the season finale of Chad Ochocinco: the Ultimate Catch. My homey Watts is taking a sick day so this is Something (Might Be) Clever.

Bush’s Approval Rating Drops…

Fortunately, we are not talking about our former president who did more for comedic material than for improvement of the country. This Bush is none other than 2005 Heisman Trophy winner Reginald Alfred Bush II, or as most people know him, Kim Kardashian’s ex lap dog. Now, usually I would never feel bad for a guy who has my dream job and signed a six-year, $52.5 million contract at the age of 21, but I do today. Earlier this year, NCAA investigators combed thru the University of Southern California on charges of player ineligibility. In the case of most star collegiate athlete’s money and/or other gifts given to the student athletes by the school, the school’s alumni, or the most common, pro agents/manager looking to sign 1st round talents. Rarely, if ever at all, does the school themselves get directly involved in such things. But, as most believe (and it is probably true) the school knew and did not say anything.

Reminds me of a movie from the 1990’s called Blue Chips starring Shaq, Penny Hardaway, and Nick Nolte. …How far have they fallen...

In Reggie’s Case, though it's real...and worse. This summer, a whirlwind around the NCAA and USC spewed out some serious sanctions against the Trojans (PAUSE) including loss of recruits and no bowl games for the next couple of years, despite their record. Of course, in retaliation USC removed ALL Reggie Bush memorabilia from the entire university including the school's copy of Reggie’s Heisman. Now the question is: Will they revoke Reggie’s Heisman? The answer has not been officially made but signs are more and more pointing to yes. The University of Texas’ coach, Mack Brown said it should be given to Vince Young who finished 2nd in the voting but did not win. Now, that the background is well in the background, this is my point: Despite all of this pay for play hoopla, Bush’s award and title should NOT be revoked.

Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Shane Mosley, Shawn Merriman, Sean Sherk and the list goes on and on of pro, minor league, and collegiate level athletes who have somehow used something to give them an edge against the competition. Whether it was steroids, HGH, corked bats, pine tar, or even lying about your age to face younger opponents, athletes have tried to get illegal advantages against the comp, and that is wrong. The reason I am not so sour on Reggie is that he was naturally better than the rest. Not against Vince Young in the title game, but definitely during the season. This is not a case of him going to some shady doctor and winding up in a Canseco tell-all. The only reason this is even being brought up is that sports agent Lloyd Lake sued Reg and his folks for not repaying over $290,000 in gifts. Lake also gave this info to the NCAA. WOW, talk about not taking IOU's!

If the issue was that Reggie Bush exposed himself to Gamma Rays or something that made him faster and more agile than everyone he played against, then fine. Take it all. Take the trophy, take the records...even make him pay his tuition back. But that's not the case. The school should have acted 5 or 6 years ago when all this was going on. Furthermore, if the NCAA really wants to stop the poaching of players, unite with the NFL and/or NBA and fine the pro players who are caught doing this in their past. But it still does not justify taking the Heisman away that he won fair and square...that's harsh. The NCAA and their "cold case investigators" now have give the same level of attention to every student athlete who is accused of this. Or let them go straight to the pros from high school and get beat on by oversized, angry, grown men who have REAL problems. Like taxes… and child support (I’m sorry). Either way, by taking the Heisman, it won’t prove anything because there are Div 1 player across the US getting paid more now as students than the cast of Basketball Wives. The best remedy: Catch them during the season. Hey, and if you don’t like Reggie Bush, the Saints, or USC, just tune into the E! channel on Sunday nights and watch Miles Austin (Pro Bowl WR for the Cowboys) scoop up Reggie’s Ex.

Don’t forget to set your Fantasy Football Rosters.

Deuces,

AJ
